Maja Nilsson is a fifteen year-old Swedish singer/songwriter, music producer and musician. She is currently working on her debut album Moments . She blogs about her music and her experiences as an Aspie. The song she’s working on now, Am I Different? is specifically about Asperger’s and has a very cool and ethereal vibe. We were so excited to interview this incredible talent and find out what is her inspiration behind it all:
How old were you when you discovered that music was your passion?
MN: Music has always been my passion and my dream. My dad plays in a rock band and he wrote music some years ago. At the age of six, I wanted to sing karaoke at children’s time at preschool.
When I was 12-13 years old, I started with songwriting in Swedish, my native language.
What is your advice to younger kids growing up who are looking to find theirs?
MN: My advice to younger kids is:
1) Let no one let you down
2) Believe in your dreams
3) Be sure to always follow them,
4) Make them come true!
Your voice is so beautiful. Can you describe what it feels like when you’re singing?
MN: When I’m singing, I feel unstoppable and free like a bird to express my emotions. My songs are mostly about feelings and things that happen in my life.
Can you describe your songwriting process?
MN: Every time I’m starting to write a song it feels like the very first time; I’m thinking on a feeling or something I’ve experienced, and I’m trying to turn it into lyrics.
Who are your musical influences?
Maja Nilsson: Imogen Heap/Frou Frou, Björk, Kate Havnevik, Sigur Ros/Jónsi, and (of course) my lovely awesome friends!
